The 10 Top Fantasy Movies of All Time

The fantasy genre in films is simply the one most popular amongst a crowd of movie goers. Much of this is because of the fact that fantasy movies are usually prepared in the most painstaking manner. It needs a lot of special effects, attractive costumes, elaborate sets, and fantastic props. It is for these reasons that these movies draw very impressive figures at the box office.

Here is a list of the top 10 fantasy movies of all time, just in case you want to build a DVD collection of this types of films.

10. Pan’s Labyrinth

The brilliant storytelling of Pan’s Labyrinth, a film released in 2006 is the thing that makes it one of the greatest fantasy films of all time. The story is set amidst the 1944 Franco war of Spain. An 11-year old child sees fairies and fantasy figures amidst the fascist rule where men of sadistic nature reign.

9. The Wizard of Oz

This 1939 film will always make it to the best fantasy film rankings of all time because of one reason – it is created with classic wizardry despite the limited technical advancement during its film making period. Dorothy and her ruby slippers will always captivate the child in you. The movie will also fulfil your never ending thirst for a fantasy-laden adventure.

8. Raiders of the Lost Ark

Clad in a pirate’s wardrobe on a very fitting pirate’s ship, Johnny Depp would take you in the fantasies of the wide blue seas.

Transformers 3: Dark of The Moon

Let’s face it right off the bat: the second Transformers movie had mixed reactions from fans around the world. Those who loved the original animated series washed their hands off of the movie, while others found the first one better.

Nonetheless, the millions it made around the world was enough to guarantee us a Transformers 3. ‘Dark of the Moon’, as it is called, is the final film in the trilogy.

And what can you expect from this movie?

Fans of Megan Fox may be disappointed as she’s been ‘kicked out’ of the movie by director Bay. Her replacement is the Victoria’s Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whitely. The question being asked by the fanbase is simple: is she going to cut it? The magic between Megan & Shia in the movie, crude as it was, worked nicely. Will this be repeated with Rosie remains to be seen.

That is probably the biggest change in the whole franchise.

That, and the fact that we’re going to the moon!

I know, human kind has been there, but Transformers 3 takes us back to the Apollo 11 mission with Neil Armstrong finding a Transformer spaceship on the moon. From the looks of it, T3 could break into the ‘space battle sci-fi’ category this time around.

Must See Movies of 2011

One of the first things that people look into at the beginning of the year is what movies are going to come out within the next twelve months. This builds up excitement for the next blockbuster. So, this 2011, what are the movies that we should look forward to?

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

This is the third installment of the Michael Bay directed franchise based on the 1980s toy line, comic book series and animated television series. Starring Shia LaBeouf, this movie picks up on a new power found on the moon. It rewrites our modern history to deepen the relationship of humans with transformers.

For geeks and casual fans alike, this should be a thrilling movie. However, considering that the last movie, although a box office hit, for a lack of better term, sucked, it’s a bitter-sweet feeling to learn about the next one. Bitter since it could again disappoint fans of the franchise especially considering the fact that Meagan Fox, the breakout female lead actress since the original movie, won’t be returning for this film.

On a positive note, Shia LaBeouf himself admitted that he didn’t like the last movie. Hopefully this would fuel a better sequel. Plus, Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee, Iron Hide, Starscream are all returning along with the other transformers plus new ones. And that should be sweet.

Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides

They couldn’t resist. And the fans are happy about it. The famous Captain Jack Sparrow, arguably the reason why the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie became such a hit, returns to the big screen. Johnny Depp returns for this role along with Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa. We will see new faces in Ian McShane as the notorious pirate Blackbeard and Penelope Cruz as his daughter and Jack Sparrow’s love interest. Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley won’t be reprising their roles as Will Turner and Elizabeth Swan-Turner respectively stating that their character’s storyline has gone as far as it could.

In the fourth installment of the Pirates franchise, Sparrow and Barbossa are on a quest for the infamous Fountain of Youth. Filming was done in the United Kingdom and Hawaii instead of the actual Caribbean like the previous films.

Thor

Next is the upcoming Marvel movie Thor. Again this film is tied up with previous films such as Iron Man and the Hulk. Here, the Mighty Thor is banished from Asgard by his father Odin due to his reckless actions which results in the re-ignition of an ancient war. He is cast down to Earth as punishment. When the dark forces of Asgard invades, he then learns what it takes to be a hero.

Being one of the original Avengers, this movie, much like Hulk and Iron Man and the upcoming Captain America film, sets the tone for an Avengers movie to the delight of comic book fans all over the globe. Thor is played by actor Chris Hemsworth. The main protagonist of the movie, Thor’s brother Loki, is played by Tom Hiddleston. Thor’s love interest, Dr. Jane Foster is played by Natalie Portman.

Thor Movie Review

The beauty of being one of the first in the world to see the new superhero flick Thor is that there is next to no buzz for the film as of yet. I think this is how all films should be seen, where things such as internet buzz and critics’ opinions shouldn’t encourage us to approach a film in a certain way. It should simply be seen, with no expectations whatsoever.

Ladies…Gentlemen and all others in between, here I am to contradict all that…What you now have is a completely pure and genuine review. No expectations to be met, no acclaim to live up to, just the movie as is. Cherish this moment, for it may not happen again for quite a while.

Now, before I continue I will be reviewing this as a film, not as a continuation story from the comic book series (haven’t read one issue). I will only critique what I’ve seen on screen and what story and characters have been presented to me from the movie. The comic book, whether they changed the story or not, I couldn’t tell you. So now on to if it’s any good and worth your fifteen bucks. If you’ve made it this far…Thor is…well…almost awesome. No, really, it’s good.

The performances from everyone here work. Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Ray Stevenson, Stellan Skarsgard, all of them pull their weight and give very solid performances. Most importantly, Thor himself (played by Chris Hemsworth, from what I’ve heard, he was one of those teeny boppers of Australian soap fame) is a likable character and Hemsworth hammers the performance down to a tee (no pun intended, I swear). In a popcorn flick like this, the performance from the lead needs to be good, quality is imperative and it needs to be believable. When characters are delivering a serious monologue and the audience laughs or have you wanting more comic relief…then the film isn’t working as it should. In the case of Thor, it works very well.  see more on dvd movies.

Another American show that can be found on the Cartoon Network is “Young Justice”, which is an adaptation of the entire DC Universe. Reviewed: I Saw The Devil (2011)

A foreign movie from the country of South Korea, I Saw The Devil keeps in tune with many of the films to successfully make it out of Korea with it’s dark and gory plot based around revenge.

It follows Kim Soo-hyeon (Byung-hun Lee) who is a highly trained agent. One night while stranded on the side of the road after her car breaks down, Kim’s pregnant fiancée is attacked and brutally murdered by Kyung-chul (Min-sik Choi). This isn’t the first time he’s murdered and it’s sure not to be the last. What he doesn’t reckon on though is Kim hunting him down for retribution.

Both killer and fiancé are continuously interlocked in a game of wits and ever more sadistic acts on both each other and bystanders as they slowly converge towards the end of the movie. As Kim is dragged ever downwards into the world of violence, he treads a fine line with turning into the monster that he is hunting and it is fair to say that many of the scenes in this film will have you feeling slightly uncomfortable if you’re not well prepared.

Movie Review: Bridesmaids (2011)

Bridesmaids is not the feel-good teen sex farce it initially passes itself off to be. Instead, it’s bizarrely reminiscent of Alien, in that the entire cast is older, seasoned and no longer the wild party-going folk we’d expect of them. While there are laugh-out-loud moments, the more substantial themes of life-altering change, staying true to oneself, and recognizing the power of friendship, are dark and serious. Once the dilemmas hit and the lead character begins her downward spiral, the joke-a-minute pacing from the introduction is lost – reflection, problem solving, reparation and forgiveness replace the humor, along with lengthy scenes of drunkenness or bad decisions that simply aren’t that humorous.

Annie (Kristen Wiig) has just lost her bakery “Cake Baby,” is forced to move in with an incredibly weird brother and sister team, is barely able to pay her bills, and drives a car clearly on its last legs. She thinks she’s reached rock bottom when her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) announces her engagement. Annie is to be the Maid of Honor, and must put aside her personal quagmires to deal with the responsibilities of organizing a wedding shower and bachelorette party. She’s in for a shock when she meets the other bridesmaids, a colorful mix of dysfunctional women: Rita (Wendi McLendon-Covey), a loud-mouthed mother of filthy-mouthed children; Becca (Ellie Kemper), a simple girl with far too few worldly experiences; Megan (Melissa McCarthy), an overly obnoxious manhunter; and Helen (Rose Byrne), a ludicrously wealthy socialite. She needs no introduction but here goes. An Italian model turn actress, she is one of the successful Italian actress that shines even brighter in Hollywood. I will like to share my list of her in my opinion best movies that’s mainly from the movie Malena and earlier.

The thing about Monica is her sensuous vibes that complements her sexy curves. In my opinion she is equal parts Audrey Hepburn (in Breakfast at Tiffany) and Marilyn Monroe. A human sculpture of subtle class and vivacious passion.
